AT THE NAME OF JESUS

MEDITATIONS ON THE EXALTED CHRIST

DAY FOUR -- CREATOR

Architect, Designer, Originator, Mastermind, Engineer

Reflect

Spend a few minutes in quiet prayer, then read Psalm 19:1-4 below, personalizing it as a praise back to God.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun.

Looking back over the last few days, what have you seen of the glory of God in creation? Do you find yourself taking the time to listen the language of His works? When you notice a sunset or feel a warm breeze, do you stop and think of the Creator whose wonders are being displayed?

1 Corinthians 8:6 tells us that there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. Have you ever taken the time to consider that you exist only through Christ? What do you think this means? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal deeper truth about this in your time today.

Read

Quietly ponder the passages below before reading the devotional that follows.

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.

John 1:3, Revelation 4:11

In a physics lab 30 miles west of Chicago, thousands of the finest minds in science converge daily around a massively complex machine. Their agenda? To discover an elusive elementary particle that they say will tell us why the universe is made of something instead of nothing. Scientists theorize that this particle with a name but not yet a face, is that which gives buffalo, geese, prairie grass and all the other things in the universe a chance to be. The quest to find it has become the greatest goal in physics.

But there is a Mind behind the mysteries of mass and matter, and whether you are one of those gifted enough to comprehend the complexities of quantum physics, or are part of the masses who feel completely baffled by the whole thing, He offers you this amazing possibility -- a personal encounter with Him. Scripture tells us His name is Jesus, the One through whom all things were made.

In a moment transcending time, as Father, Son and Spirit communed in love and joy, a plan was put into place to create a world through which God's glory would shine. It was a plan of wonder and grace that He who had need of nothing, resolved to multiply the manifestation of His beauty for His own pleasure, and the enjoyment of men He would make in His image. The Genesis account leaves much mystery as to how it all happened, but we know the Father spoke, the Spirit moved, and through the Son, creation occurred.

Have you ever stopped to think of what those moments must have been like? For example, did belly-shaking laughter bubble up within the Godhead as Jesus blew grains of pollen wafting through the air in thousands of unique shapes we will never see with the naked eye? Did the Father dance with delight upon the 200,000 square miles of table-top mountains Jesus sliced into existence in Venezuela, as the Holy Spirit sowed their soil with more than 10,000 species of plants we have yet to discover?

I remember a young college student's response to the question of why God created the world. "For the fun of it", he called out, and though his answer was unsettling in its flippancy, it revealed a profound truth. As Paul wrote to the church in Colossae, All things have been created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). The Creator's own joy, is the reason for which all things came to be. Through Jesus, the glory of the Godhead emanated this montage of miracles we call creation, wonders that delighted His soul and now ours.

In truth, the kaleidoscope of creation is only a shadow meant to make us muse on our Maker. For the greatest marvel is yet to come -- not in the creatures or the cosmos -- but in this Creator who brought them into being, and upon whom we will one day have eternity to gaze.

Respond

God created the world to display His glory – not out of any need or deficiency -- but as an overflow of delight in His own being. What might be some faulty beliefs you or others have had concerning why God created the world?

Jesus is the cause behind all creation, the Architect of every living thing. Yet the most magnificent wonders of creation will never compare to the incredible gift of seeing the Creator face to face. Since creation displays His glory, in what ways might various aspects of it give you a deeper grasp of Him? Ponder this and write a prayer of response.

A Prayer

Oh Jesus, Creator of the cosmos and of my soul in which You have come to dwell, how can I ever comprehend you? I look at the world with its wonders and works and whispers of glory, and I am dumbstruck. When I consider that You gave me all this to enjoy –sun and stars, oceans and rivers, hummingbirds and hyenas, wheat-grass and whippoorwills, canyons and caverns, bumblebees and buttercups -- I can only be in awe, and like David reply, 'What is man that you take thought of him?' Can we even fathom the tiniest taste of Your beauty? Will we ever on this earth grasp a glimpse of the grandeur that flows from Your throne? Even here in this temple of creation with its mark of sin, I behold Your touch, and can only cry, holy. And so I bow, for what else can I do?
