Day Two · Son of Man

Pause

Then he asked them,
“But who do you say I am?”
Matthew 16:15

In the stillness, trust the gentle whisper of God who is with you.
Hear Him asking,
"Who do you say I am?"

Wait before Him.
Breathe in the grace of a God
who longs for you to know Him,
who cares what you think of Him.

Ponder

Prefer to listen? Take a quiet moment and press play below.

Identity--
the way we see ourselves,
our place in the world.

What did identity mean for Jesus?
What made Him ask His disciples
that weighted question:
Who do you say that I am?

More than any other label,
Jesus chose this for His identity:
Son of Man.

To those around Him,
Son of Man simply meant human being.
No glory to it.
No divine imprint.

But Jesus hinted of a different identity—

At that time...the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
Then everyone will see the the Son of Man
coming on the clouds with great power and glory,
sending out His angels
to gather His chosen ones
from the ends of the earth.
— Philippians 2:6–11

To see Jesus as Son of Man is to hold this tension:

the Holy One wrapped in humility,
the King moving unnoticed through His own creation,
the Eternal stepping into time.

Read the passage again, looking for
a word,
an image,
or a phrase
that stays with you.

Reflect on what you’ve received--
the humanity,
the humility,
the glory.

Pray

The Son of Man became one of us.
He not only took on flesh,
but frailty.
It cost Him everything.

But a day is coming when
every eye will behold Him,
every heart will understand,
every tongue will answer the question:
"Who do you say that I am?"

Jesus,
You chose this path--
Your identity clothed in humanness,
Your glory concealed.

I want to know You.
I want to spend my life
captivated by the mystery
of who You are.

Open my eyes
and my heart.
Amen.

Practicing Worship

Once again, hear Jesus gently asking you,
"Who do you say that I am?"

Reflect on these mysteries:

The Son of Man
who had no place to lay His head…
will one day judge the world.

The Son of Man
who was made lower than the angels for a little while…
will one day return with hosts of worshiping angels.

The Son of Man
who rode humbly
on a donkey into Jerusalem…
will come riding on the clouds in glory.

Bow before Him.

Worship the Son of Man.

When you are ready,
