LEARNING HIS HEART

A CONTEMPLATIVE JOURNEY WITH JESUS
Week Four · Day Three

Compassion That First Receives

Pause

Embrace this moment as a time to rest.
Let pressures and commitments go
as you connect with His tender presence.

Sometimes the person that needs your compassion most…
is you.

In stillness, let Jesus nurture your soul.
His heart is tender toward you.
His compassion is a deep well.
It never runs dry.

(Continue with slow, quiet breaths as you receive His care.)

Ponder

There is an old saying that we cannot give away what we do not have. I have found this to be true in my own spiritual journey.

When my soul has been touched by Jesus’ presence—when I have encountered His tender care—something softens in me. Compassion begins to move more freely, without effort or pretense.

On days or weeks when I don’t experience God’s mercy for myself, my best intentions toward others can feel strained. Attempts at kindness can carry an edge of obligation or distance. But when compassion rises from a heart that has been nurtured by my heavenly Father, it feels different—gentler, humbler, more like Jesus Himself.

Read Luke 6:33–36 slowly.

And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.

Read the passage again—out loud if possible.

As you sit with these words, notice what draws your attention.
Do not rush to understand or explain.

Gently ponder:

  • What do you notice about the heart of Jesus here?
  • What feels most personal or tender today?
  • Where do you sense invitation rather than demand?

Allow a word, phrase, or image to linger.
If you have time, write a sentence or two of what you are sitting with.

Pray

Jesus,
I come with self-judgment…
You offer compassion.
I come in self-condemnation…
You extend mercy.

Let me experience Your tender care,
even when I resist…
especially when I resist.

Let me live what I long to give
in a world that needs Your gentle touch.

(Sit quietly. Wait for Jesus’ compassionate touch. Take it in.)

Practice

As you move into the day ahead,
carry one word or phrase from this passage with you.

You might return to it
when you fear you’ve failed,
when your flaws loom large,
or when you see another in need of care.

Let it remind you that you can only give away
what you’ve received from your Father’s hand.

Learning from Jesus is experiencing the compassion our hearts most need.

When you are ready, you may continue this journey.
