The Peace We Carry
Pause
Come to the quiet—it waits for you.
Rest in the stillness—it holds space for you.
Breathe deeply the presence of Christ.
He is before you, behind you,
beneath you, above you,
within you.
Welcome Him into this time.
(Rest peacefully in His presence for a few moments.)
Ponder
It is hard to experience peace when unsettling news assails our minds day and night—wars with mass casualties, natural disasters destroying communities, tragedies that feel all too close to home. The continual onslaught leaves a sense of dread in its wake—unnamed and ambiguous, yet no less real.
We often wish we could just leave it all behind. We dream of pulling away, longing to find a place free from the angst and stress that descends daily.
But this has never been Jesus’ plan. He wants to be our peace. In every circumstance He comes to calm our souls with His presence. Freely we receive...freely we go peacefully into the world to give.
Read John 20:19–22 slowly.
That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Read the passage again—out loud if possible.
As you sit with these words, notice what draws your attention.
Do not rush to understand or explain.
Gently ponder:
- What do you notice about the heart of Jesus here?
- What feels most personal or tender today?
- Where do you sense invitation rather than demand?
Allow a word, phrase, or image to linger. If you have time, write about it.
Pray
Jesus,
You speak: “Peace be with you,”
and the atmosphere changes.
Your presence quiets the pressure within,
and the restlessness without.
I lift my eyes to the world around me.
I need Your peace to fill every part of me
as I carry Your presence
to each person I meet, and in every place I go.
Let my heart be a comforting calm,
in my home, my neighborhood, my workplace,
and in the world you’ve sent me to.
(Sit quietly. Receive. Let the peace of Christ’s presence rest on you.)
Practice
As you move into the day ahead,
carry one word or phrase from this passage with you.
You might return to it
if the world is restless,
your family is anxious,
or you need the breath of peace.
Let it remind you that you carry a treasure
the people around you desperately need.
Learning from Jesus is carrying His peace into restless world.
