LEARNING HIS HEART

A CONTEMPLATIVE JOURNEY WITH JESUS
Week Three · Day Four

An Overcoming Peace

Pause

Wait in silence. God is here.
Breathe in His grace.
Breathe out the things that trouble your soul.

Look within—what fears are there? What frustrations?
Name them as you hold them out to Jesus for safekeeping.

He meets you right here.
He longs to trade your restlessness for His peace.

(Continue quietly, resting in His love for a few moments.)

Ponder

In 1980 psychiatrist Scott Peck wrote a book that started with these three words: Life is difficult. His premise was that when we acknowledge this reality, life isn’t quite so hard. Striking a chord in readers across the world, the book sold millions and was translated into 23 languages. It is a perennial best-seller.

Perhaps Jesus had the same idea when He cautioned His disciples that life on this earth would always have trials. Our bodies remind us daily that life is hard—knotted shoulders and swirling stomachs, angry outbursts and sleepless nights, chewed up fingernails and forehead creases. What if experiencing His peace begins with naming our fears, our restless concerns, and our anxious thoughts? What if the peace we yearn for is as close as bringing our angst into the Light of His presence?

Read John 16:31–33 slowly.

Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Read the passage again—out loud if possible.

As you sit with these words, notice what draws your attention.
Do not rush to understand or explain.

Gently ponder:

  • What do you notice about the heart of Jesus toward us here?
  • What feels most personal or tender today?
  • Where do you sense invitation rather than demand?

Allow a word, phrase, or image to linger. If you have time, jot down any thoughts that come to mind.

Pray

Jesus,
You know my daily trials.
You know where peace eludes me,
where agitation prevails.

I name these things freely.
For You have overcome this world,
and all the trials it has thrown my way today.

In the naming, I rest,
for You are my peace.

(Sit quietly. Listen. Remain.)

Practice

As you move into the day ahead,
carry one word or phrase from this passage with you.

You might return to it
when trials pile up,
when agitation stirs,
or tension takes over.

Let it remind you that peace begins with
speaking your fears and naming your angst
so that Jesus can overcome it, as He has the world.

Learning from Jesus is bringing your angst into the peace of His presence.
