LEARNING HIS HEART

A CONTEMPLATIVE JOURNEY WITH JESUS

Day Five· The Guiding Voice

Pause

Allow yourself time to settle into stillness.
Let the cares of today rest in the hands of Jesus.

Jesus loves to whisper His heart to you. Hear His calming voice.
He delights to shine tenderly through you.
Welcome Him into this time.

(Continue quietly, resting in His presence for a few moments.)

Ponder

When my first son went away to college, I was bursting with unsolicited advice. There were so many things I hadn’t said, so much guidance I still wanted to give. By the time our second son left home, that list had grown exponentially. The finality of him walking out the door filled me with a yearning to make sure they were prepared.

Jesus must have felt a similar thing in his final days on earth with his disciples. Knowing He had to leave, He made a promise so generous—it is hard to comprehend. Not only would He send the Spirit to personally guide them, but they would be brought into the inner circle to hear the voice of Father, Son and Spirit. And so, it has ever been. We are not alone. We are not on our own. Glorious mystery.

Learning from Jesus means being guided intimately and personally.

Read John 16:12-15 slowly

There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
John 16:12-15

Read the passage again—out loud if possible.

As you sit with these words, notice what draws your attention.
Do not rush to understand or explain.

Gently ponder:

  • What do you notice about the heart of God here?
  • What feels most personal or tender today?
  • Where do you sense invitation rather than demand?

Allow a word, phrase, or image to linger.
If you have time, write your word, phrase or image at the top of the page and jot down two or three thoughts that come to mind.

Pray

Jesus,
You do not leave me in the dark.
You guide me into all truth.
I love hearing your voice.

As I lift my eyes to the world around me,
let Your wisdom and truth guide the way I move and respond.
May Your voice direct my paths as I carry Your presence
to each person I meet, and in every place I go.

Let my heart be tender, ever listening-
for myself,
for the world,
for Your glory.

(Sit quietly. Receive. Prepare to listen...and to love).

Practice

As you move into the day ahead,
carry one word or phrase from this passage with you.
You might return to it
if you feel confused,
disoriented,
or uncertain of your next steps.

Pause for one breath and quietly pray: “Spirit of Truth, guide me.”

Learning from Jesus means letting His voice guide you.
