LEARNING HIS HEART

A CONTEMPLATIVE JOURNEY WITH JESUS

Day One · The Voice that Speaks

Pause

Take a few deep breaths. Unclench your hands. Relax your shoulders.
Listen to the noise around you. Let it fade away.
Listen to the noise within you...release it and let it go.

Jesus speaks into the noisy clutter of our world. Softly turn your ears toward Him.
Let your posture be a listening one.

(If helpful, sit quietly for a few moments before continuing.)

Ponder

Do you remember the wonder of learning that your fingerprint was like no other in the world? Now we know that not only is our fingerprint unmatched, but we also have a unique voiceprint. The pitch, tone, and cadence of the words you and I speak come together in a way no one else’s does. Even institutions now rely on our voiceprint to protect us from fraud.

Jesus too has a unique voiceprint—in a world of many voices, it carries a recognizable signature. There is a cadence to the things Jesus says, a tone in His words that is unlike any other. Through the noisy chaos without and within, Jesus speaks-quietly, gently, personally. He calls us to listen...and to learn.

Read Matthew 17:2-5 below slowly and thoughtfully.

As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”” Matthew 17:2-5

If you have time, read the verses again aloud (or even as a whisper).

Allow a word, phrase, or image to linger.

As you sit with this, notice what draws your attention.
Do not rush to understand or explain.

Gently ponder:

  • What do you notice about what the Father emphasizes in these words?
  • What feels most personal or tender toward you today?
  • Where do you sense invitation rather than demand?

You may want to take some time to journal your thoughts.

Pray

Jesus,
You are the God who speaks.
Your voice is like no other.
I bring You a heart to hear...and the questions that this stirs in me.
Teach me to listen...and to learn from You.

(Sit quietly. Listen. Receive.)

Practice

As you move into the day ahead,
carry one word or phrase from this passage with you.
You might return to it
when the noise within or without grows louder,
when you find a moment of quiet,
or as you commune with others.

Let it gently remind you
that learning from Jesus means
responding to the Father’s simple invitation: Listen to Him.

Learning from Jesus means listening to His voice.
